![]() I did technically rank Family Feud the highest though, mostly because of the element of teamwork. ![]() I like trivia, I like trivia games, yes I enjoyed my time with this title, no there isn't any real reason to play it in 2019, etc. Yep, the same things I said up above still apply here. Everything in volumes one and two were pretty short in hindsight, but I think this may be the new champion.ĭid I beat Wheel of Fortune Deluxe Edition? is this the shortest review I've written yet? It might be. But if you're really into Wheel of Fortune, or you're a sick enough person to play the entire Super Nintendo library, then I guess you could certainly do worse than play any of these games. What else is there to say? If you want to play a party game with friends. Just know that for all six titles everything is executed competently enough to not be a detriment to the experience. No one is gonna be playing something like WoF and worrying about how good the spritework is, or how faithful the theme song sounds. I'm not even gonna bother going over things like graphics and sound for this cluster of games either. Eventually roll bankruptcy on the spinner and lose your shit in front of a live studio audience. I'm sure I don't need to explain the setup of WoF either, but here it is anyway: spin a wheel, guess a consonant or "buy" a vowel, laugh at Pat's dumb jokes, and ogle Vanna White. In any case, it's another series of admittedly fun games from GameTek that are, nonetheless, virtually obsolete nowadays. Or maybe I like trying to figure out the puzzles. Which might just tell me I'm one lazy son of a bitch. ![]() Why? I'm not really sure - I guess choosing a single letter is more fitting for a video game than laboriously trying to key in an entire word, hoping that you spell it right. So while I think that Jeopardy! is the superior game show, I'll give the Wheel of Fortune titles the slight edge as far as video game adaptations go. Because let's be real, you'd buy it for Switch or PS4 if you planned on doing any such thing. ![]() I mean, I guess unless you are underage, or want to play this with your kids or something, and you're expecting them to be able to answer 25-year-old questions. There is absolutely no reason to ever play any of these as the whole experience is just completely obsolete nowadays. So while I completely understand why these games were made, and why people would have enjoyed them back in 1994, their time has passed. No one in the 21st century wants to sit around with their friends and pass a controller around while slowly entering letters into a system. On the other hand, are these games as fun as, say. If nothing else they are faithful renditions, that capture much of that fun of providing the questions for Alex Trebek's answers. So how do the three Super Nintendo video game adaptations of the show stack up? Well enough, I guess. The show's also been around for a million years because there's an elegance in its simplicity. Jeopardy! is basically the same idea as pub trivia, right? And though I almost never watch the show (mostly because I never watch anything on broadcast television outside of sports in a bar), I love the formula: answer questions, get money, bet that money on getting other questions correct, and lose it all in a blaze of glory. So it goes without saying that I love to do pub trivia so that I can show off my useless knowledge of Heisman Trophy winners or Spaghetti Western directors. Something about knowing all of the "things" must be in my blood because I compulsively do it all the time. I don't know why exactly that is, just that anytime someone mentions a name I don't know, a band I don't recognize, a world event that has slipped my memory, or a piece of lore that has escaped my notice, I usually head straight over to Wikipedia so I can begin correcting that. I will also admit that I am a huge trivia nerd. Just know that after this there will only be one last batch of games (much later on) that will get a similar treatment. Is it a lazy way to judge games that I deem too different from the rest of the libary to be separated from one another? Maybe. Don't tell me you didn't see that coming. Yeah, that's right, I grouped all of the "game show" games together.

Plus, more servers means more bandwidth for every user, which also translates to faster speeds. The number of servers is important because the closer you are to a server, the faster your data transfer rates are likely to be. In fact, an increasing number of providers feature multiple thousands of servers distributed around the world. That is a fairly respectable number, though it doesn’t compete with some of the best VPN providers out there that boast networks of more than 1,000 servers. Ivacy’s network currently includes just over 450 servers. Those who are hoping to double their security by using The Onion Router (TOR) in conjunction with a VPN will be disappointed. Additionally, having such advanced encryption will stop DNS leaks for good. Having such encryption means that your security risks will be low while you’re connected to this VPN. Considered unhackable by cyber security personnel the world over, 256-bit encryption is the gold standard when you want to prevent anyone from acquiring your information. Using these is not recommended as they are among the oldest and least secure VPN protocols.Īdditionally, Ivacy uses AES 256-bit encryption to protect your data. However, they also offer a menu of acceptable alternatives if, for instance, your device is not compatible with OpenVPN. Ivacy sets default protocols to OpenVPN wherever and whenever it is possible. Production for 1899 officially wrapped in November 2021.Īccording to the creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, the series is a multicultural look at a diverse group of people traveling on a ship to New York at the turn of the 20th century when they encounter another ship adrift in the ocean, and things take a turn for the worse. “Everything has to be decided beforehand, you have to create it, build it, so it’s all ready to shoot in-camera.” “You literally take post-production and make it pre-production,” creator Odar told Deadline. However, some have criticized certain projects for relying too heavily on the Volume, which is still a poor replacement for practical effects. Instead, the locations can just be rendered and projected. Known as the Volume, it’s a state-of-the-art filmmaking method designed to make production easier as it doesn’t require extensive location shoots. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the same technology currently used to film Disney+’s Star Wars spinoff series The Mandalorian and various other projects from The Batman to Thor: Love and Thunder. While filming had only just started in April 2021, the process was already much further along thanks to groundbreaking cinema technology than it would have been if it were filmed traditionally.ġ899 has a unique method of making its 122-year-old world a reality: its first season was filmed on a soundstage with an LED backdrop run with Unreal Engine. Yeah he'd get a hold instead of a save, but he needs to deal with it. If I've already used him, then I go to my next best guy all the way down the line until it's high-five and handshake time. I want my best reliever who can handle the pressures of late game scenarios to be used in the highest pressure situation. Do I want my best pitcher to face him with a 2 run lead and the bases loaded in the 7th or when he comes around again as the tying run in the 9th with a man on? Sure you can't see the future, but I've got a pretty good idea what's going to happen if Pujols hits against my 7th inning guy with the go-ahead run at first base. The inning I face Pujols/Fielder/Bonds.etc matters less to me than the game situation. But there's a reason the 7th inning guy isn't the closer. I'm of the opinion that a lot of pitching coaches would like to do it this way, but a lot of managers like to have the "set" bullpen. I really enjoy talking about these scenarios, truthfully. I certainly wouldn't hestitate in the seventh, though. A guy who's been pretty darn good at keeping the other team from scoring since our closer went down. Lou went to the guy whose job it is to make sure the other team doesn't score at all. Today was a situation where the Cubs needed the Pirates to not score. The closer doesn't just close games, but typically faces the highest pressure situations with the least amount of room for error in a given game. As much as I dislike said analyst, I tend to agree with that philosophy. Be that when you need to get out of a jam in the 7th, need somebody to put up a zero in eighth (like today), or get outs 25, 26, and 27. I know a lot of people (particularly certain national TV analysts who I don't agree with on a lot of things) have been saying for some time that the closer should come in in the late innings during the time when you need him the most. That's the same situation if I'm closing a game down at home. If I give up a run or two, our chances of winning are dramatically less. But why are they any different when you need a zero when you're trailing in the eighth than when you're ahead in the ninth? Same amount of pressure. ![]() ![]() I mean, some guys like LaTroy can't do it, but now LaTroy can't do anything right. OFFICIAL BOARDS These are 1:1 crops, but you’ll need to click on the image to see it big so you can actually see it at 1:1 Here’s an example of standard Lightroom sharpening, and cleaned up using this method. Of course, this is all very subjective so you may not agree, but anyway, I’m providing all the bits you need to try this, so if you don’t like it, then don’t use it. It may technically be slightly softer on a pure edge level, but I think it’s more film like and natural looking. The way I’ve designed this is to give a more organic look and take the weird painterly like patterning out of the image. I suggest using one of the sharpening presets I’ve provided before, as I’ve designed the action based on using these first. Before you send it to Photoshop or run the action, you should set up sharpening in Lightroom first. I’ve posted instructions on how to do this here. You can turn this into a Lightroom Plug-in by saving the action as a droplet, and then setting up an external editor preset in Lightroom. What this will do is clean up the edges and then sharpen the image using my somewhat unorthodox sharpening method. For this method, the Action in my set (called “Thomas Set” - hey, keeping it simple!) that you want to use is called “Fuji Quick Fix”. Luckily, I’ve done all the hard work for you and I have a set of Photoshop actions that you can download at the end of this post. Doing this involves the use of find edges to make a mask, and then a combination of blurring and sharpening. The first solution is to sharpen the image in Lightroom to a reasonable amount and then once you’ve finished, send the image to Photoshop and clean up the edges. Solution 1 - Clean up the edges in Photoshop So what is the solution then? Well, I’ve come up with two approaches. I absolutely respect that opinion, so you don’t need to read any further! Of course the look of images can be a subjective matter, and some people have very strong feelings on the issue, so if you’re of the opinion that the files are perfect as they are, that’s great and you don’t need to do anything else. (I could be completely wrong mind you, but this is my best guess) I can only assume Adobe is using an aggressive demosaicing algorithm to avoid aliasing and moire issues caused by the x-trans sensor’s lack of anti-aliasing filter, and to compensate the sharpening is having to work overtime, leading to sharpening artefacts. Much softer than they are when you turn the sharpening off in other software. If you turn the sharpening off entirely in Lightroom, the images from X-Trans files are very soft. The problem seems to be Lightroom’s sharpening, or more specifically the interaction of the two. The problem doesn’t seem to be entirely down to the demosaicing algorithm. Since I wrote that originally, I’ve discovered something interesting. Here’s what I hope is clear example of this false detail effect that I’m talking about: Iridient Developer on the other hand (and some other third party developers) doesn’t have this issue. However, no matter what you do, you may be able to reduce how noticeable it is, but you can’t get rid of the false detail that Lightroom is creating. It seems to be exacerbated by Lightroom’s sharpening algorithms, and that’s why I spent quite a bit of time trying to come up with those sharpening settings to try and mitigate the problem. When this occurs repetitively on fine textures, you end up with mushy detail. It looks like an additional line around objects, almost like an embossing or an outlining effect. The problem is that Lightroom seems to generates false detail around high contrast edges. ![]() It’s especially noticeable in areas of trees or other foliage, or other repetitive textures. Here’s a snippet from my original post on the issue:ĭespite an earlier fix which addressed the demosaicing of X-Trans files, Lightroom still has problems with fine textural detail. The advantage of this is that you can get clean and natural looking results without having to learn a new piece of software, and by using the droplet as a plug-in approach I blogged about last week, you don’t even have to leave Lightroom.īefore I get into the solution, just as a recap, let me go back over what I believe the problem is. I’ve been working on this for a while now and I believe that by combining Lightroom and a little bit of Photoshop you can get close. Many of the comments I’ve received have been wondering if there’s a way to get close to the output of Iridient Developer or Photo Ninja using a combination of Lightroom and Photoshop. I’ve also offered some Lightroom sharpening presets that help mitigate the demosaicing issues a bit. In my ongoing quest to get the best from Fuji’s raw files, I’ve previously discussed the issue with Lightroom’s processing, some alternative ways of developing raw files using Iridient Developer and Photo Ninja. This is the long awaited final (for now) part of my series on Processing X-Trans files. The Flint Hills have been termed “the crown jewel of Kansas,” and rightly so. These factors could mean a flood of false religious claims. Meanwhile, opposing COVID-19 vaccinations has become a matter of political identity for many on the political right. The objectors really do object to vaccination, but their reasons are not religious. Law professor Dorit Rubinstein Reiss has compiled anecdotal and survey evidence that most claims for refusing school vaccination requirements on religious grounds are false. There is evidence that many claims of religious objections to vaccination are false, particularly given the large anti-vaccine movement in the U.S. When it comes to vaccines against childhood diseases, where the danger did not seem great or immediate, many groups have just taken people’s word for it if they say their religious views prevent vaccination. Still, many employers and governments alike have been reluctant to challenge religious exemption claims. So employers do not have to allow religious exemptions to their employees. But the Supreme Court has interpreted “ undue hardship” to mean anything more than a minimal expense, meaning employers don’t need a reason anywhere near as strong as a compelling interest. ![]() Title VII of the Civil Rights Act requires businesses to accommodate workers’ religious practice as long as they do not cause “undue hardship” to the employer. Many private employers requiring vaccines offer religious exemptions, too. But they could protect people from mandates from their state or local government. ![]() Those state laws could not protect anyone from a federal vaccine mandate, and many of them only apply to certain groups – usually schoolchildren. Most states explicitly authorize religious exemptions to vaccination, and sometimes philosophical exemptions as well – regardless of the government’s compelling interests. In some states, however, the situation is more complicated. AP Photo/Mary Altaffer Offering exemptions People rally at a demonstration against COVID-19 vaccination mandates on Aug. By avoiding medical complications, those exceptions actually serve the government’s interests. Usually the only secular exception to vaccine requirements is for “ medical contraindications,” meaning that a vaccine would harm the recipient - for example, if someone is allergic to an ingredient in the vaccine.īut these medical exceptions don’t undermine the government’s interest in saving lives, preventing serious illness or preserving hospital capacity. If there isn’t such a secular exception, the government doesn’t have to show any reason at all to refuse religious exemptions. Under the current law of the Constitution, people have no right to a religious exemption from a rule unless there is also a secular exception or gap in coverage that would undermine the government’s interests just as much. The Supreme Court’s current interpretation of the Constitution does not always require a compelling interest. This is a preliminary opinion and seems unlikely to stand up through further proceedings and appeal, since every judge to encounter such an issue in the past has ruled the other way. Now, a federal judge has granted a temporary restraining order to prevent Western Michigan University, a public school, from requiring its student-athletes to be vaccinated. Until last month, no state or federal court had ever granted a religious exemption when the government had to demonstrate compelling interest in requiring a vaccine. The unvaccinated also endanger people who are vaccinated because no vaccination is 100% effective, as is evident from the number of breakthrough COVID-19 infections in the U.S. ![]() The unvaccinated endanger people who are immunosuppressed or cannot be vaccinated because of their age or any other medical reason. The government has a compelling interest in preventing significant threats to other people’s health, and especially so in a pandemic. The Supreme Court has never been clear about the full range of what counts as “compelling,” but some cases are clear. The most stringent standard is that the government should not require people to violate their conscience without a compelling reason. There are a variety of ways to present a religious liberty claim, each with a different set of rules. But the legal basis of Americans’ supposed right to a religious exemption to vaccination is less clear than such policies’ popularity would suggest.Īs a lawyer and scholar who focuses on religious liberties, I have supported religious exemptions for a baker who refused to create a cake for a same-sex wedding, a family-owned business that refused to provide emergency contraception to its employees, a Muslim prisoner who was obligated to grow a beard and many others.Įven so, I believe that under the general law of religious liberty – including the Constitution and state and federal religious freedom laws – the government has an easy case to refuse religious exemptions from vaccines against infectious disease. |
